Substack vs. Medium

Nicked this graphic from this website.

I’ve published on both these platforms for some time now. I don’t really have an opinion about which is better.

You can find a comparison of the two here. I kinda skimmed it. It doesn’t look like it was entirely written by an AI. So that’s … okay, I guess.

The way I see it, they’re different. As different as bananas and cumquats.

Substack is like a combination blog, social medium, community builder, and potential membership site. Kinda. Or paid newsletter with direct messaging capabilities. Something like that. In any case, you can set your own price for paid subscribers. $50 annual or five bucks a month seems to be a favorite level, at this time.

Medium is more akin to a typical online magazine. I couldn’t begin to explain the exact process for determining what authors get paid, once they put their work behind the paywall. But my guess is that amounts vary widely.

In fact, I’ll go so far as to guess that amounts vary widely on Substack. That’s just a gut feeling. I haven’t pored over statistics or anything.

And then there’s Patreon. You know, the oddest thing happened to me. A while back, I started not just one Patreon page, but two of them!

PS: A happy belated 90th birthday to the awesome Tom Baker!

One reason to be on Substack! :)
