Screenwriting 101: How to Get Started — One Honest Indie
Hi, I’m gonna talk a little bit more about screenwriting and producing and their relationship. Uh, yeah, the first thing you need to know, if you’re gonna get into screenwriting is to be serious about it, because if you’re not, you’re gonna wanna give up after the 10th or 20th or 30th version of “No”. And you’re gonna hear a lot of no, or a lot of things like, I don’t understand what you’re saying here. This needs to be clearer. Uh, what? No, this really doesn’t do it for me. Things like that.
You’re gonna hear a lot of that, unfortunately, because at first you’re not gonna really know what you’re doing. And the thing is, I think learning screenwriting is a process. You have to go through the process of number one, watching the medium or listening to the medium that you’re writing for. Number two, sitting down and really looking at samples of that kind of writing.
So what I’m saying is get out there, look for places online that offer copies of screenplays. They are all over the place, by the way. You have a site called Simply Scripts. You have some other things, Slug Script, or Script Slug. I don’t know.
Anyway, I will include a list and you can download that list (click that link) and check it out for yourself, because really you start reading that stuff, you get to know the proper pace of a story. You should be able to identify where the emotional-what do you call them?-beats begin and end. Where does Act Two start? Where does it end? Each beat has to carry that story along, too. Along the story arc that you’re creating. So, it’s a very exacting process and it helps a lot to read screenplays. I can’t emphasize this enough. So, along with watching movies and all of that, that’s my first point. And I’ll get to more of this in the next video about screenwriting.
