My Review of ‘24/6: The Power of Unplugging One Day a Week’ — One Honest Indie
Hi! Today. I’m reviewing 24/6. Tiffany Shlein is the author. And it’s about the power of unplugging one day a week. And this book makes a very compelling argument for that.
I got to say that I definitely have gone through some periods of not being on social media or just dropping out entirely, and believe me, I think it’s a great thing to take at least a day and just set it aside and not deal with all of that. But I think she touches on some issues that really resonated with me.
And one part I liked in particular was where she says:
“Websites, smartphones and apps know our emotional buttons, and they are pushing them all the time. Like my mother says about family, they know where all our buttons are because they installed them. With technology-which involves pushing or tapping literal buttons-this is even more true. We have created this system to track and push and prod and nudge just into buying, trusting, and clicking, accepting every cookie we’re offered. It’s only gotten worse as the web has become more of a monolith. When it changed from a decentralized network to a behemoth centralized through a few corporations wanting to monetize every moment by playing to our animal nature, the web really got beastly.”
That is so true. And this is a great book. I mean, I got it from the library, but I am tempted to buy a copy simply to have it on hand so I can read it every now and then, and remind myself that this is important. Anyway, I love the book, so I highly recommend it. Talk to you later. I totally forgot to mention that it’s got a filmography at the end, the author’s films. Now I’ve gotta watch those!
So anyway, that’s it. Thanks!
