My Book Review of ‘A Penny Earned’ — Debbi Mack
Hi, today I’m reviewing A Penny Earned: A Murder Mutts Mystery by M. Ruth Myers, and I’ve read it on my Kobo for what that’s worth.
I enjoyed this book very much. I also enjoy Ruth’s Maggie Sullivan series and the character, the main character in this book is one of the supporting characters in her Maggie Sullivan series. His name is Heebs, that’s what he goes by. I can’t remember his full name at this point. It’s always just Heebs to me. In any case, he was a newsboy in her books, in her other series, and now he is a private eye and he’s come to Wyoming, I believe it is, to work with an attorney who is unfortunately murdered before he can get there. And so he’s a little curious about this of course, but it seems that there’s a lot of shady goings on as far as this murder is concerned.
I mean, they’re trying to blame it on a vagrant and he’s questioning this. But at the same time, he’s a person from, I believe it’s Dayton, Ohio, who moves to this place to work with his partner, and where does he start? Who does he know that he can trust? He doesn’t have the usual, wonderful cast of supporting characters that most series people, series protagonists have. So it’s like you’re starting fresh in a way. You’re starting fresh with the book and he’s starting fresh at a new place in a sense, because he has to gain the trust of these various people in order to do his job.
So it’s quite interesting to watch him adjust to this environment because I know a little about what it’s like to move from the East coast to the West and adjust to a new environment, believe me, and adjusting to a new environment while trying to solve his potential partner’s murder and trying to figure out who to trust and who not to trust in dealing with various local idiosyncratic characters. It’s all very interesting. Plus he’s disabled. He has a hook for one hand and he has a little dog that is just so adorable that you’re going to love him.
If you’re a fan. I got to tell you, if you’re a fan of M. Ruth Myers’ Maggie Sullivan series, I think you should definitely read this book. Definitely you’re going to want to get to know Heebs, because he’s a really great guy and he’s a cool private eye. And with that, I’ll just say I highly recommend this book. That’s it, and I’ll talk to you later. Thanks.
