Mayday!
Hi! Thought I’d hold off until May Day to post this, because I’m distressed about the news.
Unfortunately, it’s April (as I write this) and I’m all out of “gift links” from The Washington Post and their owner, “Mr. Wonderful” Bezos.
But now that it’s May Day, hang onto your wallets, guys, and prepare to give up some power/money love!
So here’s the roundup:
They helped the CIA in Afghanistan. Now they’re suffering in America.
Quoting from the article:
At night,as his wife and seven children sleep in their Baltimore apartment, the former Afghan warrior lies awake — in pain, worried and angry.
His prosthetic left leg — the one he needs after losing the real one in a 2017 firefight — leans against a wall, the dull metal catching the moonlight.
In the next room sits the accordion file folder where A. Tabesh, 39, keeps the commendation he received for rescuinga wounded American CIA officer during the same battle.
He was a member of a clandestine U.S.-trained counterterrorism force known as the Zero Units, drawing backslapping praise from American handlers who called him “brother” and hatred from Taliban leaders who accused the group of war crimes.
When he got to the United States, Tabesh expected a hero’s welcome. Instead, his immigration status is in limbo, unpaid bills are piling up, and his family’s new home is in a neighborhood plagued by violent crime.
“It’s been four days that I have been unable to sleep because of this hurt, this pain I feel,” Tabesh, whose full name is not being used because he has relatives still in Afghanistan, said through a Dari interpreter. “I lost my leg because of them.”
Many of the 85,500 Afghannationals who arrived in the United States as part of the massive U.S. evacuation in August 2021 are also struggling for stability. But the hardships are even more acute among the former Afghan special operations forces who fought alongside Americans and now suffer from battle trauma, according to nonprofit groups seeking to help those fighters.
I could go on, but at some point that would be copyright infringement.
And I’m supposed to trust Discord? [Blogger’s note: This link no longer works.]
Pretty self-explanatory.
And, BTW, Gene Weingarten. Feast your eyes on this! 🙂
Opinion TikTok might be part of a plot to make us dumber.
Wake up, George. We’ve never been a socially-fluid, classless society.
RIP Anne Perry, writer and convicted murderer. [Wow! That link didn’t last long!]
Between this article and this headline, I have no idea what to believe,
Army veteran was plagued by panic attacks. Then he hiked 11,000 miles. This one comes absolutely free from Military Health Careers and Education.
I think I need to take a good long hike. Assuming I can still walk on my dystonia-twisted foot. Hell, I’ll roll myself on my electric trike down the Appalachian Trail, if needs must. Or something.
PS: I’m blogging almost all of this.
PPS: Thus passed another hour of my life …
And on the following Sunday, here’s what I noticed in the paper.
EPA plan would impose drastic cuts on power plant emissions by 2040. This is assuming, of course, that the plan actually is enacted into law. And hopefully not vetoed or overturned or thrown our entirely.
This all comes from “three people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a plan that is not yet public.”
Well, that cat’s out of the bag, eh?
Twitter removes labels from state-controlled media, helping propaganda. Or even more reasons not to use Twitter.
This sounds like a really depressing heavy book. I’ll try to get to it after I finish reading my already endless TBR list. (Gift link from The New York Times! A newspaper not owned by Mr. Badass Bezos. Yet.)
Sometimes old technologies really are best.
Tourists do a lot of fucked up shit. Especially on Instagram.
And I’m outta here! 🙂
I’ll finish with a song by the National, because I’d never even heard of “sad dad rock” before this.
He does look sad …
PS: Thus passed another half-hour of my life.
Not counting the editing time, the updates, etc., etc.
PPS: Something I didn’t expect to see in the comics today.
From Mutts.
And then, on the final Sunday of April, I couldn’t help noticing this …
From the April 30 issue of The Washington Post.
Is this what they mean by irony? 🙂
Will “ladies and germs” go out the window, too? 🙂
Has it occurred to you that some of us just don’t want kids? What is it about this topic?
Oddly enough, once again, I couldn’t find Ron Charles’ article about banned books.
But I did find this!
If I weren’t so busy reading scripts and crime fiction, I’d start a banned books club.
This just in from my Google Alerts!
Marvel Enlists TRUE DETECTIVE Creator Nic Pizzolatto to Work on BLADE Script.
I liked True Detective, at least Seasons One and Three. Somehow, I ended up missing Season Two. Anyhow, I still liked it.
From the blogosphere: Powertool Cheerleaders vs the Boyband of the Screeching Dead.
Now, who could resist that headline?
My death is close at hand. But I do not think of myself as dying.
How’s this for a post-post-post script? 🙂
