Creative Nonfiction Prompt (Part Something More)
Here’s another one of those timed exercises I did for the Creative Nonfiction class I took. (Is it “nonfiction” or “non-fiction”? I could look it up. But who cares, right? :)
I was that girl (That’s the title.)
I was the girl who wanted to travel around the world. And have wild adventures. I was also the girl who was scared to be without means.
I was the girl who was the new kid every time I moved to a different city or town. I gained and lost way more friends during my teen years than I ever had before them.
I was the girl who took a “gap year,” but didn’t backpack through Europe or go anywhere other than to my job at Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor Restaurant. It didn’t take long for me to realize I wanted to go to college.
I was the girl who started taking electronics technology (a subject in which I developed a sudden fascination during my “gap year”) at Montgomery Community College, only to end up after a few years, studying and getting my degree in journalism.
I was the first girl at Farrell’s in Wheaton, Maryland, to work behind the fountain counter on a regular basis at night. The owner had this crazy notion that girls couldn’t handle the job. I proved him wrong.
I was the girl who moved to northern California long enough to earn an Associate of Arts degree from Santa Rosa Junior College.
I was also the girl who took her first piano lesson at the age of 17 and almost majored in music, instead of journalism or anything else.
