10 Myths About Writers
I wrote this using speech recognition. Trust me, you’ll notice it makes a difference in my writing. What you see is what came out verbatim. But it’s been lightly edited. For clarity. 🙂
1. Writers all live in these ivory tower houses in the middle of nowhere. Or they all live on Park Avenue in New York. They live someplace or other that is “special.” But no. Writers are just people who write. They write wherever they happen to live. It doesn’t have to be a special place, whatever that means. So, what makes a place special? Maybe the place where they’re living is special to them. Not going anywhere with that so I’m just gonna stop.
2. Writers are all drunks. No, that’s just not true. I can’t even remember the last time I had a drink. It must’ve been during some conference or other. Other people were drinking and I figured “what the hell.” Well, after one of those I usually figured out why I’d stopped. It didn’t really make me feel all that good drinking. In fact, if I had too many of what I had just sipped, I would’ve ended up with a hangover the next day. I know because I have had hangovers in the past. That was when I was very young, just turned 18 in fact. That was back when you could drink at the age of 18 in Maryland--beer and wine only. Hard liquor was not on the menu for those in the 18 to 20-year-old range. However when you turned 21, the bar was open — all open. This…
